Life Is Not a Snapshot

The irrepressibly happy vibe that Josh Wilson radiates can’t obscure the serious themes within his music. His 2009 EP Life Is Not a Snapshot continues in the festive yet thoughtful Christian folk-pop vein that made his debut album so engaging. Wilson carries himself with a footloose, slightly wistful air in these songs, especially on the spirit-rousing “Sing” and the self-critical (yet still cheerful) “Listen.” Beyond their surface sparkle, though, these songs acknowledge the sufferings of the world and the doubts plaguing even committed believers. “Right In Front of Me” weighs the evidence of God’s presence, while “Do You Want to Know” takes a hard look at the price of compassion. Balancing such heavy offerings is “How to Fall,” a wide-eyed glimpse of dawning love with a Jason Mraz-like feel to it. The EP wraps up with a dazzling instrumental treatment of “Amazing Grace,” allowing Wilson to show off his virtuosic guitar skills.
