Brushy Creek - EP

Although Josh Abbott Band unapologetically wears their ‘90s influences on the sleeves of their plaid Wrangler western shirts, they come across sounding more classic than dated. Perhaps it’s the unaffected drawl and the true Texas twang seeping into their sound, or maybe it’s just Abbott’s knack for writing memorable songs with well-thought-out lyrics. The title track opens this four-song EP with red-dirt twang and lots of barn-dance fiddle setting the stage for a summery good-time soundtrack. “All of a Sudden” kicks off with a grinding organ before Abbott comes in singing like a young Ryan Adams with his breathy inflections and textured tone. The undeniable standout track here is “She’s Like Texas,” a festive serenade with doubled fiddles, high-lonesome harmonies, and pastorally poetic lyrics (“Her teeth are as white as cotton in the fall”). The semi-anthemic “I Just Wanna Love You” is so catchy and impressive with it’s polished but tasteful production, that it almost takes the “alt” out of alt-country — hinting at future recordings with possible crossover potential.
