Following up an eponymous 2015 debut, Sound Prints reconvenes for Scandal, another bracing set of music conceived in honor of Wayne Shorter. Like-minded veterans Joe Lovano (saxophone) and Dave Douglas (trumpet) each contribute several tunes and work deconstructive charms on two Shorter classics. The supple, multigenerational rhythm section (bassist Linda May Han Oh, drummer Joey Baron) startles at every turn, while pianist Lawrence Fields’ advanced, restless harmonic sense and hard-swinging lyricism spark a heightened tension and release, in a deeply Shorter-esque vein.
