Love Panic

Love Panic

The duo of Jake Rabinach and Sharon Esper air their private laundry in public in ways that should inspire codependents everywhere. “Same Mistakes”— the opening cut from their 2014 debut album, Love Panic—appeared on the first season of HBO’s Girls and perfectly fit the show’s neurotic twentysomething energy. Just as their album cover is photographed in black and white with an emphasis on grays, the songs throughout have a deliberate lack of color, preferring the minimalist grinding tones of electric guitars matched with vocals where even Esper sounds drained of her passions. It should be noted that they do perk up for “Supplies for Arson.” This ‘80s/‘90s–style pop-rock is what you might imagine The Raveonettes could sound like without all the reverb and distortion. On “I Wanna Get High with You,” they radiate a Mazzy Star–like narcotic buzz. “F***ing Around” sounds like the poetic thoughts of a guy who doesn’t have the energy to shave for a date. An intriguing debut.
