The Definitive John Coltrane On Prestige and Riverside

The Definitive John Coltrane On Prestige and Riverside

Without question one of the most talented, influential, and celebrated jazz musicians to ever blow a horn, John Coltrane rightly resides in the upper-echelon of musical geniuses of the 20th century. From his early days as a sideman through his late-period sonic experimentations that that left fans and critics completely flabbergasted (in awe and/or disdain), he was a true original whose work is constantly being rediscovered by new generations. This 21-track compilation focuses on his earlier recordings, specifically 1955 through 1958, and finds him working alongside Miles, Monk, Red Garland, and Donald Byrd, among others. Many of the selections are jazz standards, and 'Trane plays strictly tenor here, without getting as freaky as he would on later releases. Nevertheless it's a great collection, and a fitting introduction for someone just starting to appreciate his immense talent. Standouts include "Lush Life," "Lover Come Back to Me," and the original composition "Straight Street."
