Ruining It for Everybody

Ruining It for Everybody

Even hardcore disciples of grindcore might find it refreshing how iwrestledabearonce refuse to take the genre too seriously. That’s not to say the Shreveport, Louisiana quintet is solely mocking this music. Sure, they’re obviously having a fun time blending in such experimental elements as electro glitches, pseudo disco breaks, cabaret piano and various cartoonish sounds. There’s no doubt that tiles like “Karate Nipples” or the brutally dark “It Is ‘Bro’ Isn’t It?” were meant to be laughed at. But from the opening “Next Visible Delicious” it’s also evident that the band is very interested in mashing genres into one another to keep metal sounding fresh and unpredictable. Throughout their third album, the angelic singing of Krysta Cameron rubs against Mike Montgomery’s throat-grating screams for a beauty-and-beast effect. “This Head Music Makes My Eyes Rain” is the album’s master-crafted centerpiece. It immediately drops us straight in the eye of the storm where Cameron’s siren singing lulls the listener under ambient trip-hop flourishes before the metallic maelstrom closes in.
