Amala

Amala

Amala is an expanded edition of the explicit and explosive singer’s 2018 debut, released after her unshakable hit “Mooo!” went viral (search #MooChallenge and catch up). For those new to Doja Cat, she’s a Los Angeles rapper/singer who does sex talk like a dockworker in heat. “All Nighter” and “Cookie Jar” are freaky fracases. The album’s standout “Go to Town” is the most orally adventurous song since Khia’s “My Neck, My Back” or the Yeastie Girlz’ “You Suck.” Lines like “And she shave it all off, Charlie Brown with it” and “I be textin’ peaches/He text me an eggplant/I text him a peanut” will have carpoolers spitting latté foam. Yet for all the racy imagery, she comes equally rugged when confronting bad relationships (“Game,” “Candy,” and “Casual”). Doja Cat also shows she can downshift with oceanside vibes (“Wine Pon You,” “Wild Beach”), even classical. “Fancy” interpolates Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major (a go-to wedding song) while boasting about her luxury lifestyle: “I’m a target, but I never shop at Target, got it?” Got it. Also included are new single “Juicy” and breakout hit “Tia Tamera” featuring Rico Nasty.
