Pianist Garry Dial and alto/soprano saxophonist Dick Oatts explore lesser-known gems from the Duke Ellington catalog in this beautiful outing with Germany’s WDR Big Band. Arranger/conductor Rich De Rosa seizes on the uncanny adaptability of these songs, from the old-school midtempo swingers “Kiki” and “Let the Zoomers Drool” to ambitious modernist reworkings of “Hey, Baby” and “Kcor.” Dial’s finely articulated piano and Oatts’ reed virtuosity (and flute on “Just a Gentle Word Will Do”) make Rediscovered Ellington a worthy tribute to one of jazz’s greatest.
