Ramble

Ramble

Jamey Johnson band member Chris Hennessee is a classic Nashville journeyman. But outside of his duties as a side player and songwriter, he’s also been conjuring up his own solo records for years. Ramble, his fourth LP, shows off his considerable chops and gritty twang. Despite the album’s firm country foundations, its strongest songs come when Hennessee dips into his Southern rock and bluegrass roots, as on the slow-burning title track (featuring Alison Krauss’ gossamer vocals) or the tongue-in-cheek boot-scooter “A Little Too Loretta.” He lets Jesus take the wheel on “Gospel Songs” and “Jesus Loves Me” (which features guest vocals from his young son), allowing a little soul to shine through. He even mixes it up with a cover of Foo Fighters’ “Learn to Fly,” which is as surprising as it is satisfying.
