George Jones and Conor Oberst might find common ground in the songs of Cale Tyson, who grew up listening to emo and embraced heartbreak country in college. Careless Soul is a testament to the elegant dovetailing of those traditions: “Somebody Save Me” finds Tyson crooning in an affectingly unornamented drawl (reminiscent of Say Anything) over horn-led swing; “Dark Dark” opens with a delicate strum, busts open into pedal-steel wails, then pulls back with delicious restraint. A perfect marriage of torch and twang.
