Though Valli and The Four Seasons were one of the most commercially successful acts of the '60s first half, the triumph of The Beatles and all that followed in their wake would essentially relegate them to yesterday's news. This 1966 collection was arguably the apotheosis of the Seasons' hit sound, a uniformly strong album built around the group's effusive blend of rock, pop and r&b, anchored by Valli's trademark soaring falsetto and the band's tight, modern harmonies. It's hard not to hear the influence the band had on Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys; indeed there are moments like "Pity" and "One Clown Cried" when it's not clear who's influencing whom. The album's consistency alone was acknowledgement of the era's changing times, one that inspired strong, varied performances well beyond its muscular title single, ranging from the doo-wop retrenchment of "Living Just For You" and r&b-tinged "Sundown" to the signature effervescence of their cover of "Can't Get Enough of You Baby."
