People in the Hole

People in the Hole

Portland, Oregon-based singer-songwriter Catherine Feeny came to many people’s attention with the quick and gorgeous tune “Mr. Blue” that was featured in the film Running With Scissors. Since then, she’s spent much time in England before heading back to the U.S. People In the Hole is her third album and her most alluring to date. “You Better Run” punches things up with a horn section that accentuates and reinforces Feeny’s often emotionally frail vocals. “Junk Queen” is a feisty alt-country jam with singer Brian Wright of the Waco Tragedies. But most of the album is what Feeny describes as “ethereal and more experimental.” “The Rest of Them” uses beautifully clenched harmonies to support the simple guitar, piano and silences. “Jacaranda” is another tender ballad that keeps things at a basic, primal level, while “Last Night I Awoke In the Midst of a Dream” has a sorrowful row towards heaven that could be the envy of Patty Griffin. “He’s Like You, Only Better” adds a soda-pop-shop piano and a girl-group arrangement to shine its light.
