Gravity

Gravity

Continuing their evolution from melodic European death metal toward modernized, palm-muted metalcore, veteran German fivesome Caliban crank out riffs and breakdowns that threaten to cause whiplash. But they do it with real symphonic finesse, calming into an eerie ambience in “brOKen” and supplementing their bass-and-snare-forward groove with tuneful piano in “Who I Am.” The singing has gained clarity too, but that’s not to suggest the band have abandoned their bloodthirsty side—“The Ocean’s Heart” and “Mein schwarzes Herz” sting with a brutality that’s truly ominous.
