Over the Bridge of Time: A Paul Simon Retrospective (1964-2011)

Believe it or not, this is the first single-album Paul Simon retrospective to include highlights from both his days as Simon & Garfunkel and as a solo artist. Naturally, 20 tracks is brief for an artist with a 50-year career, but the songs included here are mostly the obvious ones, with only a few later selections being less universally known. Curiously, four of the six S&G tracks are from the Bridge Over Troubled Water album. Of the solo material, “Slip Slidin’ Away” is the only track that never appeared on a proper studio album. (Its first album appearance was as a new track on the now out-of-print Greatest Hits, Etc.) The songs selected from the post-Graceland period are non-hits. For example, “The Obvious Child” and “Born at the Right Time” from The Rhythm of the Saints, are passed over for the beautiful-but-esoteric “Spirit Voices,” while “Love and Hard Times,” from 2011’s So Beautiful or So What, was chosen over the single “Getting Ready for Christmas Day.” Altogether, this makes the case for Simon’s continued artistic mastery and relevance.
