The Essential Byrds

The Essential Byrds

The Essential Byrds offers a well-curated dive into the band’s 1965-67 Greatest Hits and adds smart representations of their output through '71. Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" introduced The Byrds' chiming folk rock to the world and set a high bar for Gene Clark's dolorous pop ("I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better") and Roger McGuinn's modal magic ("Eight Miles High"). The Byrds subsequently invented country rock with the help of Gram Parsons ("Hickory Wind") before winding down with gospel ("Jesus Is Just Alright") and bluegrass ("Farther Along") flirtations.
