Na Drê

Na Drê

The music of Africa is a rich and multifaceted tapestry made up of a very wide variety of musical and cultural traditions. Singer Gnahore covers a lot of ground here, singing in seven different languages on subjects ranging from affairs of the heart (the title track) to a more serious look at women’s issues. She’s backed by a modern acoustic-based band equally at ease with Congolese rumba, Kenyan benga, or Ghanian highlife, as well as Western pop and funk. Highlights include the sweeping piano-and-strings–driven “J ai peur” and the voice-and-percussion opener, “Allah.”
