Post-hardcore rock doesn’t come much smarter (or nervier) than L.A.’s Touché Amoré. The band’s third album tops their previous efforts by stretching beyond genre confines with admirable fearlessness; Touché Amoré refuse to wallow in rage for their own sake. Lead singer Jeremy Bolm tears into his demons with unusual subtlety, making his howls count for more than mere cries of pain. Guitarists Nick Steinhardt and Clayton Stevens support him with cogent riffage that’s brutal without being musclebound. When they choose, the band can unleash blasts of pure desperation, shown by the jittery “DNA” and the convulsive “Blue Angels” (featuring Vow’s Julia Blake on vocals). Tracks like “To Write Content” and “Praise/Love” veer between harsh assaults and serene passages as Bolm testifies with self-lacerating honesty. “Harbor” is a particularly definitive track, riding a tumbling rhythm and delivering a clean-edged guitar wallop. From the skull-bashing force of “Just Exit” to the low-lit simmer of the instrumental “Non Fiction,” Is Survived By pushes hard against sonic boundaries.
