Wire

Wire

It wouldn’t be right to call Third Day a bunch of hell-raisers — after all, they’re a top Christian band. Nonetheless, they delivered a devil of a rip-roaring album with 2004’s Wire, one of the best Southern rock releases in recent memory. The Georgia-bred group always exposed its swamp-blues roots, though 2000’s Offerings album had shifted their focus more towards worship music. But whatever aggressive instincts they might’ve suppressed were more than reclaimed on Wire. Guitarists Mark Lee and Brad Avery unleash hard-crunching chords on “’Til The Day I Die” and “Come On Back To Me”; the whole band grooves righteously on the smoldering “I Believe” and the strutting “I Got A Feeling.” Even better are two jaundice-eyed looks at show biz, “Billy Brown” and “Rockstar” (the latter almost power-pop in its catchiness). None of this is to imply that the band soft-pedals its faith — singer Mac Powell raises his commanding growl to honor the Lord in tracks like “I Will Hold My Head High” and “I Believe.” Wire testifies to both Third Day’s unshakable Christian convictions and their ability to rock like the natural-born rebels they are.
