A prolific and eclectic guitarist and songwriter, Steve Gunn has recorded with GHQ, been a part of Kurt Vile’s touring band, collaborated with Michael Chapman, and released multiple solo albums and singles. And that’s just the short list. Time Off is a brilliant recording that highlights Gunn’s many gifts. Joined by longtime collaborators John Truscinski on drums and Justin Tripp on bass, this tight trio references various genres without straying far from American roots. At six songs in about 40 minutes, the album layers acoustic guitar with some electric embellishments and sublime solos. Gunn sings on five tracks, his vocals mysterious and slightly sunk into the mix. “Water Wheel” and “Lurker” feature mesmerizing 12-string guitar figures and sticky melodies, while “New Decline” is a slide guitar blues that rides a deep groove before resolving into a spacious jam. “Street Keeper” features droning flute behind a rolling rhythm. “Old Strange” is a moody fingerpicked pieced supported by light drumming and cello, while the expansive closer, “Trailways Ramble,” is the lone instrumental.
