Brian Tyler may be one of Hollywood’s busiest composers (his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Expendables 3 projects also opened in the same two-week span), but he still finds new challenges. “Into the Storm was an opportunity to do a completely conceptual score,” Tyler said of the unusual musical metaphor employed for Steven Quale’s storm-chasing disaster film. “The idea was that an approaching storm is represented by the premise of being stalked in the savanna by a lion or tiger: primal but patient. African flutes whistle in the far distance over completely still strings holding like a lion stalking, waiting patiently to strike. Then without warning, the power of the storm is upon you before you are even aware. This was a really fun and rewarding concept for me to compose.” But the composer notes that that’s only half the scoring equation here; the other “emphasizes human emotion, including loneliness. It features a melancholy tone that comes from realizing we all are fragile and at the mercy of powers outside of ourselves.”
