The Sydney-based Canyons (a.k.a. producers Leo Holiday and Ryan Sea-mist) put the mental back in experimental with a debut album that takes plenty of heady risks in the realm of retro synth-pop. After the short instrumental “Circadia” opens the album with buzzing drones and stretched-out tones, “Under a Blue Sky” fuses trendy Brooklyn-flavored indie disco with pitched-down French singing and sassy jazz saxophone solos blasting under sampled animal noises. “My Rescue” builds on that triumphant MGMT-inspired sound with loose, baggy drumbeats that have more in common with the early-'90s Madchester sound of The Happy Mondays. Similarly, “See Blind Through” resurrects the kind of deep house that people had to follow a secret map to dance to. Over this, various vintage videogame sounds blip, beep, and blast as a soul singer croons into an echo chamber. After flirting with looped guitar riffs, “Sun and Moon” grooves on underground indie laptronica—but a weird, warbling, falsetto vocal performance and sax solo keep the song afloat.
