Frobama

Frobama

Like his idol Too Short, Afroman’s blend of no-nonsense rhyme skills and lackadaisical humor captures the spirit of old-school hip-hop in a way that few contemporary rappers can. Though it is invested with significant talent, Frobama is a party album first and foremost, and like the oldest hip-hop records its primary goal is to have fun and entertain the crowd. Afroman is beloved as one of the country’s preeminent weed rappers, and Frobama’s series of smoking songs run the gamut from fun-loving and goofy (“Smokin’ Weed”) to paranoid (“Smoke 2 Blunts”) to downright bizarre (“Marijuana, Malt Liquor”). Even at its goofiest Frobama gets by on charm, mostly because Afroman is able to take his music seriously without ever taking himself too seriously. The fact that he splits his time between two locales (Palmdale, California, and Mississippi) is what gives the album its flavor, but it also makes for some of Afroman’s most poignant and personal tracks. The forlorn nostalgia of “I Don’t Wanna Leave” will stick with you long after the smoke from the rest of the album clears.
