Rocks Into Rivers

On their sophomore album Rocks Into Rivers, Seabird proves that the lyric insight and melodic grace shown on their earlier work was no fluke. The Cincinnati-based Christian quartet continues to display an affinity for British pop/rock, both in its ‘60s and more recent manifestations. Aaron Morgan’s expressive tenor and elegant, classically inflected piano remain the focus of Seabird’s sound, though his sibling Ryan’s spiky guitar lines grab the spotlight in “Finally Done Right” (a heartfelt tribute to Michael Jackson). Ambitious, cinematic-like arrangements lend grandeur to “This Ain’t Home” and the title track. Seabird doesn’t neglect its radio-friendly side with the ultra-catchy “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful.” Lyrically, the starry-eyed sentiments of “Baby I’m in Love” and “The Sound of You and I” offer contrast to the more sober resolution heard in “This Road” and “Believe Me.” Rocks Into Rivers keeps its more ethereal tendencies from becoming excessive thanks to the band’s attention to songcraft and rhythmic flow.
