Reinvention beefs up and fleshes out a batch of Superchick’s best-known tracks with sonically striking results. Founder/producer Max Hsu indulges his penchant for studio wizardry by adding guitars and drums loops for added crunch and sizzle. Songs like “Rock What You Got,” “Hey Hey” and “Bowling Ball” take on an ultra-contemporary edge, emphasizing the urgency of their life-affirming messages. A particular highlight is “One and Lonely,” revised with fresh rhythmic punch and instrumental sparkle. Complimenting the old favorites are three new tunes that sustain the Christian pop/rock band’s consistently high standards. “Let It Roll” finds bassist Matt Dally flexing his funk muscle, while “With You” shines the spotlight on lead vocalist Tricia Brock in an acoustic-centered setting. Most arresting is “Still Here,” a statement of spiritual resolve wrapped in Evanescence-like melodrama. These tracks catch Superchick in mid-evolution, striving for ever-bigger impact. In a word, Reinvention rocks.
