Bastards

Bastards

After the collaborative free-for-all of Biophilia’s high-tech R&D projects—apps, custom instruments, etc.—Bastards opens up Björk’s hard drive to remixers old and new. Longtime colleague Matthew Herbert puts his skittering stamp on a trio of throbbing reworks, while electronic noise group Death Grips unlock the polyrhythmic intricacies of two songs. Most unexpected are two rerecorded versions by the Syrian folk singer Omar Souleyman, who reimagines her songs as sidewinding, spellbinding Middle Eastern shaabi—bittersweet music fueled by sampled drums and spine-tingling vocal melodies.
