Just Married

Just Married

Anyone who longs for the brazen rudeness of bands like The Dead Boys, The Circle Jerks, the pre–Henry Rollins Black Flag, or similarly crazed outfits will connect with the gleefully careening tunes here. Bandmates Zack Schwartz, J.P. Casanova, and Arik Dayan approach familiar post-adolescent topics—girlfriends, substance abuse, free-floating alienation—with a bleary-eyed spirit that spews irreverence over anything within reach. Boisterous ditties like “Broken Cigarettes,” “Hot & Informed," and “Me + Geniene” match Schwartz’s earnest screams and pouting murmurs with surprisingly tuneful (if often jagged) instrumental work. The band’s profanity-laced lyrics are raw, angry, and often surreal, filled with embarrassing confrontations and confessions of failure. The grungy “Why Am I Not Going Under Water?” and the jazzy “My Black Dog/Cosmic Being” capture just the right mood of hangover-induced despair tinged with self-mocking laughter. If the likes of Green Day seem a tad too premeditated these days, Glocca Morra’s Just Married offers a bracing squirt of that old-time punk joy juice, just when you need it.
