Neva Done

Though he never really blew up as a solo artist, there's a good chance you've heard Grap Luva somewhere before. The younger brother of Soul Brother #1 Pete Rock, he was also half of the group INI and has crafted beats for a wide assortment of artists, including J-Live and Method Man. Produced by Kev Brown, Joc Max, and Grap himself (and mastered by the legendary K-Def), this is his first official solo record; it's an 11-track EP that combines new joints and older unreleased gems from his massive crates. Like his brother, he's got an undeniable knack for sublimely catchy, jazz-flavored samples paired with simple but strong drums and low-key, laid-back wordplay. Though it's primarily an instrumental set, some quality rhymes are on display here; most notable are "Work It Out" and "Work Is Never Done" featuring underground veteran Damu the Fudgemunk. The rap-free numbers are all excellent, but "Westside Highway" and the aptly titled "Rocking with Elegance" are especially nice.
