With The Besnard Lakes’ You Lived in the City EP, what’s immediately noticeable is how the Montreal quartet has moved into a more ambient, instrumental direction. These four movements were intended as a musical score for the online documentary Welcome to Pine Point. A moody Mellotron sets the stage for the opening “We're Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time)” before Olga Goreas’ demure vocals try to remain buoyant in a sea of reverb. She doesn’t seem to mind being upstaged by the accompanying instrumental beauty, making way for a squealing, overdriven guitar solo on two different parts. The second time it nearly takes over the tune, channeling the ghosts of early-'90s shoegazing in a blissed-out maelstrom of stormy guitar wash. The following “Holiday Sin” and “Some Colour in the Sky” incorporate the familiar psychedelic sounds and tones associated with The Besnard Lakes, but since they serve to accompany moving pictures, these compositions prioritize texture over tune.
