Creaturesque

Creaturesque

This is the second release from Throw Me The Statue and the biggest difference between this and their fine debut, Moonbeams, is that it’s no longer a Scott Reitherman one-man project. Now a quartet, the sound is fuller and more dynamic and the added input helps flesh out Reitherman’s quirky and lovable songs. Despite a rather narrow singing range, Reitherman wrings a great deal of emotion and variety from his sweet vocals, giving life to his oblique and intriguing lyrics. The tunes are well crafted and cleverly layered and they manage to fill up a lot of background space with keyboards and sundry electronica without smothering the songs or coming off as too dense. Memorable moments abound, such as the glockenspiel and horn break on “Waving At the Shore,” the ultra-catchy guitar hook of “Hi-Fi Goon,” and the synth riff on “The Outer Folds” to name but a few. Creaturesque is a charming indie-pop release with lasting power.
