If you were just waiting for ‘50s doo-wop, ‘60s girl groups and homoerotic humor — laced together with a sly, punky, anything-goes aesthetic — to merge in an aural ... er, orgy of delight, well, wait no more. Hunx & His Punx are a frothy blend of all those things, with four young women on keyboards, guitar and drums, and singer Hunx (Seth Bogart) in hot pink boas and zebra skin prints. Where past work by the Hunx was more overtly queer-punk lyrically (see 2010’s Gay Singles), the songs on Too Young To Be In Love are delivered with a dash more innocence, woeful tales of lost boyfriends and dead-end dates that happen to be sung by a guy. One part John Waters and one part Phil Spector, tunes like “Lover’s Lane” and “He’s Coming Back” bring the Ronettes and the Shangri-Las into the 21st century, with the Punx’ solid, vintage-flavored playing perfectly backing Hunx’ deadpan whine and tragicomic delivery. “Bad Boy” has the sting of ‘70s punk rock (Ivan Julian of Richard Hell & The Voidoids produced here), with bassist Shannon Shaw’s powerful vocals pushing the song over the top. Good times.
