All Fours

All Fours

The leading doom-folk band of New York's Capital Region turns the night into a mass hallucination with its 2010 debut album, All Fours. Primary tracks were caught on tape at the upstate SRV Universal Temple over the course of two days, with additional recording and mixing done to help newcomers find their way in the dark. This is quiet music, with a buzzing determinism driving the tracks from behind. Songs like "Seeing Stars," "Hell in Sparks (A Night That May Have Been About Dying)," and "Maine" float past with guitars, keyboards, Meg Hotter's violin (also particularly effective for the instrumental "Faust"), and the vocals creating a placid disturbance not unlike latter-day Talk Talk, but with Americana roots. Hints of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's Appalachian tranquility give "Victoria" the aching feeling that it could all fall apart or pass out at any given moment. Frank Moscowitz's keyboards add a surreal shimmer, while Nick Matulis and Mike Hotter combine on guitars for an approach that's subtle and gentle but in no way laid back.
