Greatest Hits (Re-Recorded Versions) [Remastered]

Even though this “greatest hits” collection features re-recordings that the recent Dokken lineup made of the classic band’s big songs, the effort turns out surprisingly well. Admittedly, guitarist George Lynch was an integral part of these songs, but his replacement (Jon Levin) is so good that you never feel like anything is missing. Don Dokken’s voice doesn’t have the operatic push it did in 1987, but he brings to these songs a newfound weathered experience that serves to deepen them. While some of the tunes might lack the spark of the original performances, there is no doubt that the production has been improved. The boxy, echoing style of late-‘80's metal is replaced here by a meaty guitar sound, and a fat, full-bodied instrumental blend. Amazingly, “Alone Again,” “Dream Warriors” and “Unchain the Night” retain the atmosphere of the originals without sacrificing the heavy charge of modern production. “Re-recorded” is a phrase that will make any longtime fan cringe, but Dokken fans shouldn’t worry so much. These tracks aren't so much remade as they are renewed.
