Since the early '90s, New Orleans has produced many classics in the hyperactive subgenre of hip-hop called bounce—but the crossdressing performer Big Freedia found ways to make a great thing even better when he started recording in 1999. This collection collects the underground singles he released between then and his breakthrough year of 2010. Most of these songs make early bounce classics seem dull by comparison. “Gin in My System,” “Rock Around the Clock,” and “Ya’ll Get Back Now” don’t only capture the spirit of the genre—they embody the wild soul of New Orleans itself.
