For his first proper solo album, Hawk Nelson guitarist Jonathan Steingard considers matters of the heart and spirit with a thoughtful yet buoyant air. The music here is well crafted and a bit wistful, the work of an artist reflecting upon his past and musing about his future. Steingard’s vocals often sound sweetly naïve, suggesting contemporary singer/songwriters like David Barnes and Jason Mraz as well as ‘70s mellow popsters like David Gates. Tracks like “Everything” and “Curtains” boast breezy, ear-snagging melodies, while “You Always You” and “The Seige of Atlantis” are darker in tone and more conflicted in mood. Much of the album reflects Steingard’s yearning for a closer walk with God, though shimmers with a romantic vibe and “1983” offers an affecting portrait of his parents. The album’s production approach plays off electronic murmurs and muted drums against coffee house-style acoustic strumming to pleasing effect. If you are looking for introspective folk-pop with a positive Christian outlook, Under the Canopy is a nice place to be.
