Mission of Burma drummer Peter Prescott formed Volcano Suns to continue the sharp, abrasive post-punk of his former band after its leader Roger Miller developed tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and had to take a sabbatical from over-amplified rock. This debut album is looser and freer than any Mission of Burma release, sounding more like the result of an after-concert victory party, ebullient even when the songs sport titles such as "Descent Into Hell" and "It's Stewtime." The band's unison to harmony vocals are mixed louder than most indie-rock bands for greater, commanding impact, yet the discordant guitar tones refuse the songs an easy pop appeal, even as "Jak" and "Balancing Act" scream with hummable accessibility. There is always tension brewing in the rhythms. The instrumental, "Truth Is Stranger Than Fishing," sports a tough ambience that reflects a tumultuous ocean undertow amongst its shimmering cadences. The 2009 re-master includes the group's "Sea Cruise/ Greasy Spine" single and several live cuts (Prince's "1999") among the nine bonus tracks.
