Rebels of Babylon

Rebels of Babylon

2007’s Rebels Of Babylon finds Oakland’s Time Flys injecting their love for bellbottomed punk with 21st century anachronisms. “Stoner Rock” is a two-minute tantrum of hyper-activity that makes fun of pretty much any long-haired sludgy rock band. Sneering frontman Eric Johnson rails against “songs that never end” and urges against the worshipping of Black Sabbath. He switches his focus to lampooning Los Angeles rock ‘n’ roll scene queens on “Lil’ L.A.” with an undeniably catchy melody bolstered by endearingly out-of-time handclaps and distorted guitar leads that sound lifted right off The Real Kids’ 1977 eponymous debut. Nobody is safe from the snarky sentiments on Rebels Of Babylon, even similarly nostalgic music fans. With distorted 1950s rock guitars breaking up over doo-wop inspired backing vocals, the slower-paced “Dead Rock-n-Rollers (Are Still Dead)” takes pointed jabs at the very reissue-vinyl-buying music fans who attend The Time Flys’ shows.
