Lush arrived seemingly out of nowhere with the release of 1989’s Scar on the prestigious London-based 4AD label. The precocious female-led foursome quickly drew the ire of their peers, who resented their apparently immediate success. In reality, Lush were an old band going through a rapid change. Imbued with traces of The Smiths and Gun Club, “Baby Talk” and “Bitter” reveal their general post-punk roots, but Lush were already moving into brighter and more original territories. “Thoughtforms” and “Scarlet” were the earliest signs of the eerie, airy sound that would make them famous.
