Souvenirs

Dan Fogelberg’s second album, released in 1974, shows a man blessed with a honeyed burr of a voice that sounded equally at home on FM radio as it did in the hearts of music fans who preferred songs unencumbered by mawkish sentimentality. The near-anthemic opener (“Part of the Plan”) is Fogelberg’s signature hit, showing how producer Joe Walsh expertly added some rock ’n’ roll and pop to Fogelberg’s country-folk tilt. That same blend gives up beautiful examples of geographic longing (“Illinois”), lost nostalgias (the title song), relationship regrets (“The Long Way”), and a rouser rooted in bluegrass (“Morning Sky”).
