By the time Feid's breakthrough LP, 19, hit the airwaves in May of 2019, his musical Midas touch was the stuff of legend within Colombia's ebullient reggaetón universe. The rising singer-producer had proven his mettle crafting career-defining blockbusters like J Balvin's “Ginza” and Reykon's “Secretos,” in the process helping to cement Medellín as a South American Nashville for aspiring reggaetón stars in search of a golden ticket. But even as he found success behind the scenes, his sights were always set on center stage. 19 became a vessel for countless lessons picked up masterminding big-budget projects and a manifesto on the future of reggaetón's pop-crossover reign. On the album, Feid masterfully blends innovation with a hefty dose of nostalgia. He links up with Spanish producer Alizzz on “Buena Mala,” tapping into the potent pulse of Puerto Rican trap that made stars out of Eladio Carrión and Myke Towers but switching up the formula with silky R&B crooning. Meanwhile, the sunny acoustic guitar of “Trampa” and saturated electro of “Con Tu Body” nod to the optimistic legacy of Colombian tropipop giants Carlos Vives and Fonseca.Feid's sonic and cultural references are vast. He updates the raunchy sensibilities of classic reggaetón on “Ven Pa Casa,” which is first conceived as an explicit piano ballad and later revisited with unabashed perreo gusto on “Ven Pa Casa_RGT,” as he injects the mix with flute, champeta guitars, and thumping drums. On “badwine” and “Ron,” he pays homage to his teenage love of dancehall superstar Sean Paul, spinning Caribbean fantasies of rum-fueled nights over percolating basslines, and even picking up the occasional drawling cadence. This dancehall influence is at its peak on “Sígueme (Remix),” his collaboration with Panamanian teddy bear Sech, which triangulates reggaetón's rhythmic roots with Jamaican dembow riddims.Loaded with symbolism, 19 is numerically significant in Feid's mythos as the day of his birth (August 19, 1992), the year he manifested his star turn, and even the apartment unit where he wrote many early hits. In interviews, he cited the number's biblical connection to change and perfection. 19 is about an artist in bloom, stepping into leading-man glory.
