Worn down by faceless hotel rooms and the stresses of touring, Morgan Then and Fletcher Ehlers, a.k.a. Perth electronic duo Slumberjack, grew physically and creatively exhausted in 2018. So they set off for the exact opposite environment: the tropical jungles of Sarawak, in Borneo, where Morgan grew up before moving to Australia. There, they found much-needed solace, as well as the inspiration and sounds behind their next EP, Sarawak. Throughout this heavily collaborative release (four of its five tracks were created with other artists, including Ekali and TroyBoi) are self-recorded samples from their journey. Listen for the percussive hum of cicadas, sape melodies (a traditional Bornean lute), and the booming echoes of ancient caves—it’s these distinctive nuances that make this already unique, boundary-pushing EP so compelling.
