Discutible

Discutible

Emerging from the southern suburbs of Buenos Aires, Babasónicos became one of the most vital bands in Latin rock by perfecting an oddball blend of syrupy balladry (think: Julio Iglesias), Roxy Music-style glam rock, and Black Sabbath heaviness. The group’s 13th studio album, Discutible, is steeped in oblique melodies and restrained beats—a more subtle affair than we’re used to. Opener “La Pregunta” sounds like the Argentine version of a ’90s Depeche Mode anthem, whereas “Adiós En Pompeya” revels in a sweet psychedelic haze. The sounds are comfortingly familiar, and lead singer Adrián Dárgelos’ vocals are as charismatic as ever, but this new chapter in Babasónicos’ discography signals a real maturity in the quintet’s sound.
