Long before they became masters of modern dirge metal, Oakland, California's Neurosis were teenage punks raging against the proverbial machine. Originally released in 1987, Pain of Mind is their only album to feature vocalist/guitarist Chad “Gator Tofu” Salter, and it sounds nothing like the rest of the band's catalog. This newly remastered edition captures early Neurosis in all their gritty, noisy glory, channeling English crust legends Rudimentary Peni, Crass, and Amebix on choleric three-chord blurs like “Progress” and the anguished title track, while paying homage to Black Sabbath on “Self-Taught Infection.”
