When You Walk in the Room

When You Walk in the Room

More than a decade after she last released new recordings, Jackie DeShannon returns with this acoustic collection of reworked hits and classics. Her voice has weathered gracefully, imparting wisdom to lyrics that once felt so free and easy. With little more than a few guitars, bass, and the occasional drum track, DeShannon breathes new life into her 1965 hit “What the World Needs Now Is Love” (penned by Burt Bacharach and Hal David) and Sonny Bono and Jack Nitzsche’s “Needles and Pins,” which was written for Jackie and was a hit for The Searchers. Her own compositions, “When You Walk Into the Room” and “Bette Davis Eyes” (the latter written with Donna Weiss and a hit for Kim Carnes), evoke a mature singer/songwriter finding the lasting appeal of her best material. She takes the songs back from others, proving her ownership of “Come and Stay With Me,” “Breakaway,” and “Bad Water.” The new track, “Will You Stay in My Life,” holds its own as a song that still conveys the hopeful yet slightly blue vocal approach that made her name back in the ‘60s.
