Now I Got Worry (Deluxe)

Now I Got Worry (Deluxe)

While Jon Spencer had been accused in the past of taking an art student’s enthusiasm to the blues, by the time his Blues Explosion got rocking on all cylinders, he was simply taking things to extremes. The distortion is thicker, the rhythms are harder, and the energy is fearsome. Now I Got Worry is one of the group’s finest albums, jammed tight with scuzzy lo-fi recordings and overloaded hi-fi tracks. Rufus Thomas joins them for “Chicken Dog” and they handle their own funk for “Wail,” “R.L. Got Soul” and the freaked out subliminal groove of “F**k S**t Up.” Spencer and Judah Bauer team up on guitars that don’t exactly mesh but create a wall of impenetrable grime. Russell Simins plays like a blues drummer determined to bend the needles past the red and the pure power-chord excitement of “Rocketship,” the chaotic jumble of “Hot Shot” and the fierce pounding and screeching guitar leads of “Get Over Here” make this a band for the ages. This 2010 expanded edition makes an even more severe case for the band’s abrasive garage-rock-blues. The additional “Radio Ads” make for a bizarre coda.
