You Gotta Problem With Me

You Gotta Problem With Me

Whether under his band name, Brain Donor, or as a solo artist, Julian Cope forever searches for the lost psychedelic chord that will wrap the universe up in perfect apocalyptic harmony. You Gotta Problem With Me begins with the nine-minute epic “Doctor Know” and continues slithering through the psychedelic jungle with wah-wah guitars, Mellotrons, and anything else he needs to stretch out his sound and vision. Cope’s voice is in fine form and he confronts corporate greed, environmental destruction, and religion and spirituality with a committed musicality — except in the case of “Soon to Forget Ya” where he recites his lyrics as poetry until it resolves into a garage rock singalong with a near mocking piano-pumping juke joint drive. The title track channels Iggy Pop and Cope’s early days in the Teardrop Explodes with its tough rhythms and its bargain basement keyboards. Cope long ago abandoned the pop world, content to express himself in the garage-punk-Krautrock form he adores. Tracks such as “Peggy Suicide is a Junkie” and “Can’t Get You Out of My Country” with its “Gloria” riff are breathtaking in their raw, unedited passion.
