Plunder, Beg, And Curse

Plunder, Beg, And Curse

This five-piece from Oxford, Mississippi play a chaotic form of indie-rock that channels a multitude of influences, from fuzzed-out blues to tumultuous post-punk, with styles clashing often within the same song. This aggressive approach creates dense layers where songs sound more like textured 3-D paintings than audio recordings. Guitars spiral out of control in the spirit of Sonic Youth, vocal harmonies collide in haunting diminished cadences recalling the ghosts of Alice in Chains, and the rhythms often settle on hypnotic, tribal loops. Singer Jesse Coppenbarger hides behind a slightly distorted vocal effect evoking the artsy ennui of Radiohead or the adult-contemporary bluesy croon of Randall Bramblett perverted by punk rock and an obsessive-compulsive need to repeat key phrases into the ground (“Ageless Everytime,” “Innocent and All”). Though it features ten songs, the album flows more like one long, disjointed narrative. No real story emerges, but there’s a feeling that the entire ride is one tortured night of catharsis.
