Haydn: 6 "London" Symphonies

Haydn: 6 "London" Symphonies

Colin Davis, who died in 2013, enjoyed a long, eclectic career, serving variously as the music director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, among other posts. A great Mozart conductor, he was also a devoted servant to the music of Mozart’s contemporary Joseph Haydn. The sophistication of his phrasing, the deep and cushioned sound he could draw from an orchestra, and the directness of his emotional expression made him an artist with plenty to offer. His recordings of Haydn’s “London” Symphonies with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam prove their worth with unfailing warmth, vigor, and songfulness.
