Hard Times and White Lines

Hard Times and White Lines

Hard-boiled honky-tonker Whitey Morgan spends a serious amount of time on the road. For his band’s new studio album, they explore that experience, blending the steely energy of their hometown of Flint, Michigan with a simmering Texas heat. The self-produced LP finds Morgan bemoaning how his usual pick-me-ups can’t dig him out of a low place (the outlaw country number “Hard to Get High”), pondering divorce’s aftermath (the propulsive “Around Here”), and toasting his moth-eaten existence (the swaggering “Bourbon and the Blues”). Swerving between country-and-western and roadhouse traditions, the band provides a grizzled look at classic country fare. For Morgan, it’s not about reinventing the wheel, but fine-tuning a good time.
