Named after a popular East Bay Mexican food chain, Gordo Taqueria seems sure to put the Berkeley, Calif., hip-hop/electro-pop duo The Cataracs on the map. To musicians in the know, Cyrano (a.k.a. Niles Hollowell-Dhar) and Campa (a.k.a. David Benjamin Singer-Vine) are already on the map—as producers for the likes of The Pack, Dev, and The Far East Movement. They’ve even produced Snoop Dogg’s “Wet,” which was originally recorded for Prince William’s bachelor party. “Calling Me” opens The Cataracs' eight-song EP with seductive vocals cooing over club-friendly beats, with bass and synthesizer manipulation sounding like something inspired by Deadmau5. The following is more representative of The Cataracs’ love for clouded hip-hop, right down to the murky beats and hilarious rhymes. Waka Flocka Flame and Kaskade lend their respective rhyming and production skills to the standout cut “All You,” which works in some unforgettable R&B melodies. After the near-twee trip-hop of “Ooh Yeah,” the deep hip-hop pumping “Mouthful” makes for a side-splitting chaser, especially with Auto-Tuned vocals that make fun of such digital manipulation.
