When the inarguably weird “Whatever Happened to the Million Head Collide” bursts into flames like a celestial body being born, after having first snuck up on you with a Bo Diddley beat, well, it’s like having dessert for dinner. Australia’s POND has been making neon-colored psych-rock since 2007, when guitarist Nick Allbrook and drummer Jay Watson temporarily detoured from Tame Impala and discovered a slightly different lysergic chemistry between the two of them. A handful of albums later, Hobo Rocket is the first since Allbrook permanently left Tame Impala. The album's sheer breadth reflects his undiluted focus. Even more disjointed and loose than a Flaming Lips record, it’s a wild psychedelic ride with proggy flourishes, hard-stomping glam-inflected guitar riffs, and even mellow dreamscapes. Hobo Rocket might be compared to a college kid who's away from home for the first time: trying everything is just a little too appealing. But POND pulls it off, mostly by keeping the songs succinct—the whole album is just more than 30 minutes. The title track features “mystic” Cowboy John, mumbling about horses with wings. Why not?
